Insomnia is a surprisingly common occurence, with some estimating 30% of the population suffering some difficulties.
Sleep is essential to both body and mind and impaired sleep, altered sleep patterns and other disturbances can impair the physical health and mental wellbeing of the person.
Sleeping pills can be effective in the short term but are not designed for long term use as they are addictive, have numerous side effects and can cause unnatural sleep patterns. As a result people enter a vicious cycle of taking a pill to get to sleep, awakening groggy and using caffeine to get going making the insomnia worse.
The root cause of the problem needs to be identified and a practitioner will look at the varied causes such as stress, poor digestion, and physical discomfort amongst others so this can be addressed alongside re-establishing the correct sleep pattern.
